In the third year of the Genroku era (1688 – 1704), Hanbei Izumiya started as a temple samurai at the Kurotani Konkai Komyo Temple, located on the Shirakawa Road leading from Sanjo in Kyoto to Mount Hiei.
He later became a tatami maker, and since then, Genroku Tatami has proudly been operating in front of Kurotani’s gate for more than 300 years.
Our mission is to convey the splendor of traditional Japanese culture. We will continue to do our best every day while cherishing the technique, tradition, and trust that we have earned over the past 18 generations.
