“Japanese New Year’s garland” workshop

A shimenawa is a sacred Shinto rope made of rice straw, traditionally displayed in Japan during the New Year to bring purification and good fortune.

⚠️ Important Notes
・Each ornament will look slightly different, as everything is handmade.
・Your hands may get a little dirty from the rush grass mud.
Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, or bring an apron.

【What to Bring】
・Paper bag or plastic bag to take your shimenawa home
(The finished piece will be approximately 45 × 14 cm.)

If you find the scent of tatami soothing, this workshop is perfect for you.
Start the New Year with a refreshed feeling as if you’ve just replaced your tatami.
Rush grass is also used in the sacred shimenawa ropes of Shinto shrines, symbolizing protection and purification.
